This page describes how roofing work is arranged with Castle Roofing Margate and the terms for using this website. The wording of your own written quote and any signed order is what binds both sides for a particular job, and that document sits alongside the general terms here.
The consumer rights set out below come from law, not from us, and no term on this page takes any of them away. If a term and the law disagree, the law wins.
Before work
The survey and the written quote
Nobody puts a figure on the job until the roof has been examined on site. A figure given on the phone or by message before that is a general indication and not an offer.
Once the survey is complete, a single written total price comes to you for the job the quote describes. The quote names the work, the area of roof it covers and the main materials. If anything not shown in the quote turns up once the roof is opened, you are told before that part is touched, and the extra work goes ahead only when you have agreed to it.
A written quote from us can be set beside others at your own pace, and Citizens Advice puts the sensible number at 3 or more. Look at what each one covers, scaffold and VAT especially.
Agreeing the job
When a contract is made
A contract exists when you accept the written quote, whether by signing it, replying to confirm it, or telling us in writing to go ahead. From that point the quote describes what is to be done and for what total price.
Because the survey and the signing normally happen at your home, the contract is usually an off-premises contract. The Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013 treat it that way when it is made "in a place which is not the business premises of the trader". Castle Roofing Margate is a service-area business, so this will be the position for almost every job.
Changing your mind
Your 14 day cancellation period
For a service contract of this kind, the cancellation period ends at the end of 14 days after the day on which the contract is entered into (regulation 30). You can cancel in that time without giving a reason. If a trader never gives you the cancellation information, the period is extended by up to 12 months after the day on which it would have ended (regulation 31).
Three points are worth knowing before you sign.
- Work may begin within the 14 days if you have requested that in writing, on a durable medium, which a letter or email satisfies (regulation 36).
- The right does not apply where you invited the trader out for urgent repairs or maintenance (regulation 28(1)(e)). A leak you ring about and need stopped is the usual example.
- A survey visit you asked for in order to get a quote is not an urgent repair, so a contract made after it follows the normal 14 day rule.
Our page on how to cancel a roofing contract goes through the steps in more detail.
Paying
Payment and deposits
The payment arrangements for a job are written on the quote: what is due and when. Payment is made on the dates and in the stages the quote sets out, and the final invoice matches the single total on the quote, plus any extra work you have agreed in writing.
Our guide to roofer deposits explains what to look for when a deposit is asked for by any trader.
The work itself
Standard of work and what you can expect
The Consumer Rights Act 2015, section 49, sets the standard for every service: reasonable care and skill. That applies to every job, and the remedies in the Act (including repeat performance and a price reduction) cannot be excluded by a trader.
On site, you hear what is planned for each day, the working area is kept tidy and the waste is taken away. Dates can move with the weather, because roofing is not done safely in high wind or on a wet surface, and you are told as soon as it is clear that a date will move.
The separate written workmanship cover is explained on the guarantee page.
Using this website
The website itself
The text and photographs on this site are for information about roofing and the work offered. They are general guidance and not advice on your particular roof, which needs a survey. Cost ranges shown on the costs page are typical UK ranges from named third-party guides and are never a price from us.
Links to other sites are given for reference. Those sites are run by others and their content is theirs. Details of how personal data and cookies are handled are in the privacy policy and the cookie policy.
If something goes wrong
Complaints and where to get help
If you are unhappy with any part of a job, write to us as early as you can, adding photographs if they help, and the matter will be looked at. The complaints page explains the route.
Section 308 of the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 places a duty on a trader to tell the customer which ADR scheme, or comparable route, they may use should they be unhappy with how a complaint is concluded. The Alternative Dispute Resolution Regulations 2015 were revoked on 6 April 2026, and details of any scheme that applies are given in the complaints page, not on this one. The Citizens Advice consumer helpline on 0808 223 1133 gives advice on your rights.
